Tough new swimming pool rules have been introduced in NSW which are designed to enhance pool safety in an effort to reduce the number of drownings in NSW swimming pools.
The Swimming Pools Act has been amended and pool owners are now required to register their pools on a state wide register and have their pools inspected.
Pool owners must register their pools by the 29 October 2013 and there will be a penalty ($220) for those pool owners who fail to register their swimming pools by this date.
As of the 29 October 2013, mandatory inspections of pools will start and there will be a fee for this service.
As of the 29 April 2014, pool owners will be required to have their pools inspected and passed before they can sell or lease their property.
New pools less than 3 years old will be exempt from the inspection program (3 years from the date of issue of the Occupation Certificate).
Councils will have to start mandatory inspections of pools at tourist, visitor and multi-occupancy developments.
